Pen session for Ohtani

Angels right-hander Shohei Ohtani will throw a bullpen session Saturday in the latest significant step in the two-way sensation’s return to the mound. Ohtani hasn’t pitched since June 6 after spraining an elbow ligament.

Sale to return Sunday

Red Sox ace Chris Sale is scheduled to come off the 10day disabled list and start Sunday at Baltimore. Sale (11-4) has not pitched since July 27 because of mild left shoulder inflammation.

Zhaire Smith, first-round pick of the 76ers, suffered a left foot injury at a development camp in Las Vegas on Monday. According to Yahoo Sports, Smith had an MRI exam on Tuesday that revealed a Jones fracture and he is scheduled for surgery.
