Homeless tycoon missing
Hedge-funder, 70, last seen wandering out of Bellevue
A hedge-fund millionaire who went from living in The Waldorf-Astoria to the Bellevue men’s shelter has gone missing, according to cops.
Paul Greenwald, 70, strolled out of Bellevue Hospital at 2 a.m. Saturday — around 48 hours after checking himself in there, police said.
A hospital camera recorded Greenwald as he walked out, authorities said.
Greenwald (inset), who police say is homeless, recently lived around the corner from the hospital at the Bellevue men’s shelter on East 30th Street, a police source said.
That’s a far cry from the 7,500square-foot home he once owned in Palos Verdes Estates, Calif., that’s currently worth more than $7 million, according to public re- cords and the real-estate Web site Zillow.
He has also lived in a $1.7 million Meatpacking District apartment, as well as a mansion in New Hampshire, records show.
Greenwald’s descent into homelessness marks a stunning fall from his once-luxurious lifestyle.
He was arrested while living at The Waldorf in 2009 after allegedly attacking his wife, Michelle, outside their West Village apartment, but was later committed to Bellevue Hospital’s jail ward after a panel of court-appointed specialists determined he was too sick to knowingly plead not guilty.
In 2010, he lived on Wards Island, site of the Manhattan Psychiatric Center.
Greenwald stands about 6 feet tall and weighs 200 pounds and was wearing a red shirt, black pants and black sandals.
