Bowles: Bring on bad stuff

BOWLES’ FUTURE COULD HANG OVER GANG GREEN ALL SEASON

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

Jets fans will get their first extended look at the team’s starters Friday night against the Giants. They will play at least one half, and in certain cases, well into the third quarter, coach Todd Bowles said Wednesday following the final training camp practice of the summer.

Most important to the Jets coach, though, is his starters facing adversity.

“They need to be not in just great situations,” Bowles said. “They need to be in disadvantaged type of situations. It needs to be firstand-15, first-and-20. Defense needs to have some secondand third-and-shorts, try to get out of trouble.

“The third-and-longs and the easy first downs are one thing, but they need to play themselves out of trouble and develop some more mental toughness that way.”

The most intriguing position is quarterback, though Bowles has yet to name who will start the game. It is expected to be rookie Sam Darnold, who started the last preseason game and has received a bulk of the first-team reps since.

A day after the Jets signed former Jaguars kicker Jason Myers, Cairo Santos was cut. Expected to replace Chandler Catanzaro, last year’s starter who left via free agency in the offseason, Santos was unable to get healthy after offseason groin surgery.

“You can’t control a person’s health,” Bowles said. “At some point in time, you’ve got to make a decision as a team to move forward, and that’s what we did.”

Bowles said Myers will get an opportunity against the Giants as he competes for the job with Taylor Bertolet. ... Bowles ruled out nose tackle Steve McLendon (leg) for Friday but said “there’s a chance” offensive linemen Kelvin Beachum and Brian Winters will play. Also, wide receivers Terrelle Pryor and Quincy Enunwa could make their preseason debuts.
