Gleyber ‘D’ still giving him fits

- By DAN MARTIN

BALTIMORE — The Yankees considered themselves fortunate to have a ready-made replacement at shortstop when Didi Gregorius went down with a bruised left heel.

Even after Gleyber Torres made errors in three straight games filling in at his old position, manager Aaron Boone expressed confidence the rookie would be fine.

“We’re asking a lot of him right now, obviously, with playing a new position entirely at second base and playing that so well and now, all of a sudden, throwing him over at shortstop out of need,” Boone said after Torres made another miscue in the first game of Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of the Orioles. “We continue to grind through it with him, work through it with him, and he can play that position.”

The manager attributed some of Torres’ issues to the fact he hasn’t played short regularly since last season.

“I think it’s a little bit of [having] time off and you’ve got to be a good player to play over there,’’ Boone said.

Torres made up for some of those mistakes with two hits in the first game, including his first homer since Aug. 6.

He was terrific in the second game, a 5-1 victory.

Torres made a pair of fine plays on grounders by Craig Gentry, one in the fourth and one in the sixth. Both times, Torres looked like a player that came up through the minors as a shortstop.

Torres said he was undeterred by the shaky start at his former home.

“I always feel comfortable there,’’ Torres said. “I know I made a couple of errors, but these happen. I’m just focused on making all the plays.”
