The Franklin Fur Flap: Standing Up for Animals

-

Aretha Franklin brazenly wore animal skins, defying public sentiment, the humane community and pleas from fans (“AnimalRights Loons Come for Aretha,” Andrea Peyser, PostOpinion, Aug. 30).

As society’s awareness of the realities of fur production grew, Franklin thumbed her nose at human decency.

Each fur purchase provides profit and impetus to the evil trade and future agony and death for sentient creatures. Jan McClellan Chandler, Ariz.

Times are changing, and most people now agree that animals deserve respect and consideration of their basic rights.

Aretha Franklin’s estate can help end the cruel era of wearing animals’ skins by donating the late singer’s fur coats to PETA.

While it’s too late to help the animals who suffered and died for these garments, donating them would make a powerful statement that no being deserves to be abused or killed. The coats would also help bring warmth and comfort to those who need it the most.

Mondelez, International showed how easy it is to make a kind choice when it agreed to update the Barnum’s Animals crackers packaging.

Compassion isn’t a limited resource — it’s an allencompassing worldview that includes members of all species, and only grows as we share it. Lisa Lange VP of Communications PETA Los Angeles, Calif.

PETA doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to respecting the dead. Not even a week after Anthony Bourdain’s tragic suicide, PETA President Ingrid Newkirk tweeted that it was “inaccurate” to call Bourdain kind because he was an unapologetic omnivore.

These comments were made while millions were mourning Bourdain and honoring his legacy.

PETA’s twisted agenda extends to animals, too. Public records reveal PETA shelters have killed nearly 40,000 animals over the past 20 years.

Franklin deserves respect and honor. Unfortunately, PETA only understands the words “hypocrisy” and “exploitation.” Will Coggin Research Director, Center for Consumer Freedom Washington, DC

Peyser suggested that people are brokenhearted with the end of Ringling Bros. Circus. Only the greedy owners are brokenhearted.

She also said that PETA “should try protecting vulnerable humans for a change.” Shame on her. PETA speaks for those among us who are voiceless. Sandra Fleischman Tampa, Fla.
