ETC: Two FIU football players shot
Two FIU football players were shot Thursday afternoon, and police said they were looking for who was responsible for what they called a drive-by attack.
Opa-locka (Florida) police chief James Dobson identified the players as running back Anthony
Jones and offensive lineman Mershawn Miller. Jones was shot in the face and back, while Miller was shot in the arm. Both players were taken to Ryder Trauma Center, Jones getting airlifted there and Miller taken by ambulance.
Dobson said the condition of both players is stable, and that the injuries were not life-threatening.
Oregon State baseball coach Pat Casey, who led the Beavers to three national championships, announced his retirement after 24 seasons with the team.
Maximilian Kieffer shot a 6-under 64 to lead the European Masters first round in Crans-Montana, Switzerland.
Kieffer, who never won on the European Tour, had seven birdies and one bogey in finishing one shot better than Andy Sullivan, Soren Kjeldsen, Julien Guerrier and Hideto Tanihara. Lee Westwood shot a 2-under 68 on the 6,848yard course in the Swiss Alps. John Daly had five birdies, two double bogeys and two triple bogeys in shooting a 7-over 77.
In Minneapolis, Kevin Garnett is suing an accountant and his firm, alleging they helped a wealth manager steal $77 million from the retired Timberwolves and Celtics star.
The federal malpractice lawsuit alleges Kentuckybased accountant Michael Wertheim and Welenken CPAs enabled Charles Banks IV of Atlanta to defraud Garnett through businesses in which Garnett and Banks shared an interest. Former UFC women’s bantamweight champion Holly Holm underwent successful knee surgery Wednesday and will miss the rest of the year, according to ESPN. She is hoping to return in early 2019.
Deputy commissioner Bill Daly said the NHL doesn’t expect to change its rules on marijuana with the legalization of cannabis in Canada coming Oct. 17.
