Foot injury sidelines Maye again

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

Jets safety Marcus Maye did not practice again Thursday and it is officially time to worry about his availability for Monday’s game.

Maye has a foot injury that is not related to the ankle surgery he underwent after last season. Maye missed time in training camp and did not play in three of the four preseason games. It was believed that was related to his ankle surgery, but it may have been this foot injury.

Jets coach Todd Bowles did not have much to say about the nature of the injury, just that Maye is “sore.” Bowles also would not say when it happened.

“It’s been off and on, just something he’s been monitoring,” Bowles said.

Bowles did not address whether he believes Maye will miss the game against the Lions.

“We’ll see as it gets closer to Monday,” Bowles said.

WR Jermaine Kearse (abdomen) and OLB Josh Martin (concussion) also did not practice Thursday. Lions quarterback Mat

thew Stafford can relate to what Sam Darnold will experience in Monday’s game. Stafford was the No. 1 overall pick in 2009 and started immediately for Detroit.

“Listen, this game is about experience,” Stafford told Detroit reporters, according to ESPN. “This league is about experience. You know, he played at a high level in college against some high-level competition. He’s gotten some under his belt in the preseason and he’s a talented guy.

“He can make a bunch of plays not only with his arm but with his feet. We’ve seen it more and more recently, these young guys coming in and playing at a really high level.”

Jason Myers will be the Jets kicker on Monday night despite a conga line of kickers coming through Florham Park this week for tryouts. The Jets signed Myers toward the end of training camp and he kicked well in preseason games against the Giants and Eagles. Still, the Jets explored other options this week, including former Cowboys kicker Dan Bailey.
