Mesoraco rests with disk issue

- By MIKE PUMA

Devin Mesoraco’s season might be hanging by a thread, but the Mets catcher isn’t necessarily finished yet.

Bothered on the last road trip by neck stiffness, Mesoraco has been diagnosed with a bulging disk in his back, according to assistant general manager John Ricco, for which he has received an epidural.

Mesoraco is expected to rest for about a week before he is reevaluated. Kevin Plawecki and Tomas Nido have been handling the catching duties in Mesoraco’s absence. Mesoraco left Monday’s game at Dodger Stadium with stiffness after sitting idle for most of the previous week.

Plawecki, who was removed from Wednesday’s game after getting drilled in the ribs, returned to the starting lineup Friday. In his first at-bat against the Phillies, Plawecki was drilled in the left wrist but remained in the game. He went 0-for-2 in the Mets’ 4-3 loss.

➤ Asdrubal Cabrera, in his first game at Citi Field since his trade to the Phillies, received a short pregame tribute video. The Mets dealt the veteran infielder to the Phillies on July 27 for minor league pitcher Franklyn Kilome.

➤ Anthony Swarzak is scheduled to pitch in a simulated game Saturday that includes David Wright, and Swarzak could be activated from the disabled list a day later.

➤ Zack Wheeler is on track to pitch in turn after a CT scan on his chest was negative. Wheeler was hit by a line drive Wednesday.
