Didi gets limited time in return

- By GEORGE A. KING III

SEATTLE — Gary Sanchez returned from the disabled list last Sunday. Didi Gregorius jumped off the shelf Friday night. Yet, until the Yankees get Aaron Judge back in the lineup they won’t be whole.

When that will be isn’t known, as the hulking right fielder works back from a fractured right wrist that has kept him out since July 27.

Judge accelerated his rehab program Friday afternoon by participating in tee-and-toss drills outside at Safeco Field. Until Friday, Judge had been doing those drills indoors. The next step will be batting practice.

With Giancarlo Stanton hitting in Judge’s No. 2 spot in the order, the Yankees aren’t naked, but there is no arguing the lineup is easier to navigate for pitchers without Judge’s power looming in the on-deck circle or hitting in front of Stanton.

Without Judge, the Yankees are 23-17 after Friday’s 4-0 win over the Mariners. Judge was hitting .285 with 26 home runs and 61 RBIs in 99 games. The All-Star right fielder is second to Stanton (33) in homers.

Gregorius was welcomed back to the active roster from a bruised left heel suffered on Aug. 19. Manager Aaron Boone didn’t start Gregorius at short, but put him in to start at the home sixth and shifted Adeiny Hechavarria from short to third, replacing Miguel Andujar.

“We are treating it like a rehab,” said Gregorius, who went 0-for-1 with a ground out. “Play a couple and a day off.’’

Asked if he is ready to go, he said, “I am ready to go.’’

The Yankees went 9-7 without Gregorius.

The Yankees hope Gregorius doesn’t show the rust at the plate that Sanchez has since coming off the DL.

Sanchez, who missed twoplus months with a second right groin injury of the year, is .091 (2-for-22) with a window-dressing homer in Wednesday night’s 8-2 loss to the A’s since returning.

His work behind the plate has been poor. He has been charged with three passed balls (two in Wednesday night’s game) and failed to block two wild pitches in the same game.
