Jets WRs eager to help Sam

- By BRIAN COSTELLO

DETROIT — One of the keys for Sam Darnold’s development this year will be the guys he is throwing to.

The Jets wide receivers don’t have that big, flashy name in their group, but they do have four players who have each had an 800-yard receiving season.

Jets wide receivers coach Karl Dorrell said his group is ready to help the rookie quarterback.

“We need to be reliable for him. I think that’s the key thing,” Dorrell said. “We have a tremendous amount of confidence in him, as you know. Our receivers have a lot of respect for him for what he’s done so early in his career. He’s a very accurate thrower. I think they want to do the great things for him to get him comfortable in our offense.”

The Jets are led by Robby Anderson, Quincy Enunwa, Jermaine Kearse and Terrelle Pryor at receiver.

“Those guys are all unique. That’s what I’m excited about,” Dorrell said. “First of all, they’re taller than me [6feet]. Second of all, they all have different skill sets.”

Receivers have praised Darnold during the preseason for throwing to where they are open. It’s something Dorrell said they all appreciate.

“It doesn’t change the approach but as a receiver, being a former receiver myself, it’s comforting that he’s seeing what’s around you and he’s trusting you to make plays on the ball and yet he’s putting the ball in places that is protecting the ball,” Dorrell said.

➤ Much has been made about DE Leonard Williams only having two sacks last season. But defensive line coach Robert Nunn does not believe Williams needs to change his approach to get more sacks.

“He needs to continue to do what he did last year,” Nunn said. “He was around the quarterback a lot. Sometimes it’s pure luck the difference in a quarterback hit and a sack. Some guys don’t get around the quarterback. He’s around the quarterback a lot.”
