Vitamin bet the Wright stuff
David Wright has made a lot of spectacular plays over his 14 years as a Met, but his shrewdest may have taken place off the field.
The Mets captain — who, it was revealed Thursday, will retire at age 35 on Sept. 29 after making his final start at Citi Field — played his last major league game in May 2016.
But despite battling a slew of injuries and spinal stenosis, Wright is sitting pretty financially — thanks partly to a well-timed invest- ment in VitaminWater a dozen years ago.
Wright (right) took equity instead of cash when he agreed to endorse the thirst-quenching drinks in 2006. That decision set up a financial grand slam a year later when CocaCola acquired VitaminWater’s parent company, Queens-based Glaceau, for $4.1 billion.
The deal made Wright’s 0.5 percent ownership stake worth $20.5 million.
The fan favorite, who says he’s swilled VitaminWater since he was in the minors, told The Post in 2007 that he opted for the equity stake because “I believe in the company.”
Driving the deal, he said, was the Mets’ and Glaceau’s common location in Queens.
Another celebrity connected to the borough — 50 Cent from South Jamaica — made out even better with the Glaceau equity stake he took as an endorser.
The rapper reportedly received up to $100 million from the water company’s sale to Coca-Cola – only he couldn’t hang on to it.
The “Get Rich or Die Tryin” artist filed for bankruptcy in July 2015.
