Ex-Jet Woody on Eli: He’s toast

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

Damien Woody believes he knows the Giants’ problem, and it’s not the much-maligned offensive line. The former Patriots and Jets offensive lineman pointed the finger at Eli Manning, saying the two-time Super Bowl champion is basically finished.

Wednesday, while appearing on ESPN’s “Get Up,” Woody, who retired after the 2010 season, was asked to finish the sentence: “Eli Manning is …”

“Toast. He is toast, OK?” Woody said, hammering the 37year-old Manning. “Listen, everyone has talked about the offensive line. I mean, I live in the New York tri-state area. You hear it all the time: ‘The Giants’ offensive line is trash.’ Which they are. They’re bad. They’re bad. There’s no question about that.

“But there’s been one constant with the Giants. They’ve had change at GM. They’ve had change at the head-coaching position. They signed Odell Beckham. They drafted a running back. But there’s been one con- stant, and that’s the quarterback, OK? Eli Manning. I understand he won two Super Bowls. I get it, OK? But nobody cares about that. We’re not talking about legacy here. What was that, back in like 2011? Dude, that’s like eons ago, OK? We’re talking about right here, right now.”

With Manning under center, the Giants are off to an 0-2 start and have scored just 28 points. Manning has been sacked eight times and is averaging 6.21 yards per completion, 26th among all quarterbacks.

With Sam Darnold, who the Giants passed on in April’s NFL draft, off to a strong start with the Jets, criticism has begun to surround Manning and general manager Dave Gettleman. The Giants’ brain trust opted against taking a quarterback in favor of running back Saquon Barkley, believing the team could still win big with Manning.
