ESPN getting into Durant biz

- Andrew Marchand

Kevin Durant will have a business-oriented show on ESPN+, sources told The Post.

ESPN’s Jay Williams will be the host of the program, which will delve into topics like the sneaker business. ESPN+ is ESPN’s relatively new platform for which it charges $4.99 per month.

The idea with Durant is similar to Kobe Bryant’s program, “Detail,” which also is available on Plus. While “Detail” allows Bryant to show his acumen in breaking down NBA film as a future Hall of Famer, this is less obvious as to Durant’s superior business skill set.

Either way, ESPN is trying to bring subscribers to the platform while creating evergreen content in a Netflix sort of way. Most of the content on ESPN+ is game coverage, but it does not include ESPN’s marquee events.

ESPN claimed this week it has garnered a million subscribers for Plus in five months. It had previously announced that it rolled ESPN Insider — its legacy subscription website business — into Plus. ESPN did not say how many of the million were due to Insider.

While ESPN+ is not ESPN’s main business now and won’t be for the foreseeable future, the network hopes to create a library of content, so if someone wants to watch something at any moment, he or she could turn to Plus. Disney plans soon to launch a Netflix competitor, which it logically could bundle with Plus at some point.

For now, though, ESPN is gobbling any rights it can for Plus, and as it will soon announce, another future Hall of Fame basketball player. —
