Stanton earns 1st trip to postseason

- By GREG JOYCE

These are the nights Giancarlo Stanton envisioned when he became a Yankee last December.

Four tubs full of Chandon champagne inside the clubhouse. Corks strewn across the soaked plastic-lined floors. Goggles, hats and shirts to mark the achievement.

After eight seasons in the major leagues spent watching other teams party after playoff-clinching wins, Stanton was finally part of the festivities and going to the postseason himself.

“Exactly what we came here for and we just know we got more work to do,” Stanton said after he had dried off from the champagne showers following the Yankees’ 3-2 win over the Orioles on Saturday night that secured their spot in the AL wild-card game.

Stanton had a rude welcome to The Bronx, where boos greeted him often during an early season slump as he made the transition from the Marlins, but those days seemed distant memories by Saturday.

“It’s great, man,” Stanton said. “I’m still here to work. I’m going to enjoy it tonight, enjoy this buzz and celebration, [but] know we got more work to do.”

Yankees who have enjoyed postseason celebrations before, Saturday’s was special their new teammates experience it for the first time.

“Especially Stanton, coming over here and doing what he’s done for us ... it’s great seeing them in their first little champagne celebration,” Judge said. “It’s an exciting moment. Enjoy it and soak it up, but we still got four more celebrations to go.”

“There’s no feeling like it, till you get a couple more in you down the stretch here,” Stanton said. “It’s good. It’s a good point we’re at now and just keep pushing forward, step by step.”
