Ralph gets film treatment

-

THE grand celebration of Ralph Lauren’s 50 years in fashion will continue with an HBO documentary. Susan Lacy — the director of HBO’s new doc “Jane Fonda in Five Acts” — has turned her camera on the legendary designer as her next project. Film insiders were buzzing about the imminent Lauren film — that’s been kept largely under wraps — at a sneak preview of Lacy’s latest film on Fonda over the weekend hosted by the Hamptons International Film Festival ahead of the fest’s October kickoff. The Lauren project has yet to be officially announced, even though the film was briefly mentioned as a “work in progress” in a New York Times profile on Lacy last year when HBO released her doc on Steven Spielberg. Sources told us that Graydon Carter — who’s produced films on Gianni Agnelli, Robert Evans and Nora Ephron — is involved in the project. Reps did not comment. We hear that during a Q&A with Alec Baldwin after the Guild Hall screening in East Hampton, Lacy revealed that Spielberg later sent her a note about his film profile that joked, “You have a camera style that could get O.J. Simpson to confess.” Lacy had the message framed. At the Hamptons screening, there were 300 guests including former J.Crew boss Mickey Drexler, Bob Balaban, Bruce Weber and the Hamptons Fest’s Anne Chaisson and David Nugent. Lacy — who’s also made films on David Geffen, Paul Simon and Joni Mitchell — told Baldwin that she never was able to land dream subject Miles Davis for a film, or Bruce Springsteen as of yet. When she asked the complicated “30 Rock” star if he’d be willing to be a subject, he declined. We hear that Lacy also revealed at the Hamptons screening of Fonda’s famous brother Peter, “He did not want to be in the film, I do not know why.” The “Easy Rider” star makes a brief appearance to tell an anecdote about their acting icon dad Henry. The hot film debuted Monday on HBO.
