A record win for Sergio

SAINT-QUENTIN-en-YVE-LINES, France — Sergio Garcia broke the record for most all-time Ryder Cup points with 25½, eclipsing the previous mark of 25 held by Nick Faldo.

Garcia, who was a captain’s pick, went 3-1 this week, capping it off with a singles victory over Rickie Fowler on Sunday.

When Europe clinched the cup, Garcia was among the most emotional players, openly weeping while hugging his teammates. Most of that emotion pouring out of him was about regaining possession of the cup, but some of it was related to his difficult year on the golf course. Garcia, since winning the 2017 Masters, has struggled. He missed the cut in all four majors this year.

“I don’t usually cry, but I couldn’t help it,’’ Garcia said. “What a week. It’s been a rough year.’’

It had been 10 years since the last time Englishman Paul Casey played in a Ryder Cup, and he savored this one.

Casey, rewarded with a captain’s pick by Thomas Bjorn after he rejoined the European Tour last year in an effort to try making the team on points, rewarded Bjorn with 1-1-1 record, including his halved match with Brooks Koep

ka, and he was emotional about the week.

“Yeah, there was a tear,’’ Casey said. “I was emotional earlier. I’ve always kind of been a bit that way. I cry in movies, as well. Every time, probably most of my wins, I’ve been a bit teary. Hey, not embarrassed. I care about it. It means an awful lot to me. I’m proud to be on this team and proud to be standing next to those other 11 teammates and proud to win a point.

Thorbjorn Olesen crushed Jordan Spieth one day after Bjorn sat him for both sessions Saturday. Bjorn spoke Saturday about how difficult it was to sit Olesen, a fellow Dane whom he called a close friend. Bjorn said he hoped Olesen would come out in the singles and prove him wrong for sitting him.
