Andujar pulled after another error in field
Miguel Andujar and infield coach Carlos Mendoza were on the field before virtually anyone else prior to Wednesday’s AL wild-card game, just like they’ve been for every home game this season as the two try to refine Andujar’s defense at third base.
“We do it every day,’’ Mendoza said before the Yankees beat the A’s 7-2 in The Bronx to advance to the ALDS. “Right around 3:30, he’s ready to go.”
Even on a day like Wednesday, with the season on the line, there was little activity around Andujar, as Mendoza hit grounders to the rookie.
He needs more work, evidently, because if the Yankees are going to make a second straight deep run into October, Andujar will have to be better defensively than he was on Wednesday.
Andujar made a throwing error in the fourth — after a diving stop — and was saved from another when Luke Voit made a nice play to tag Matt Chapman in the first after an errant throw.
Andujar was replaced by Adeiny Hechavarria to start the sixth inning after he reached on an infield single to lead off the bottom of the fifth.
“I’m not gonna feel disappointed about that,’’ Andujar said through an interpreter after reaching base in each of his two plate appearances. “The manager is gonna make all kinds of moves.”
That one paid dividends, as Hechavarria made a spectacular catch on Marcus Semien’s line drive to lead off the top of the seventh.
“We did a lot of things well and then got some guys in there defensively that helped things,’’ Boone said.
