Just Report the Facts: A Call for Objective Media

-

Jonah Goldberg’s plea for journalism to be objective is right on the money, and journalists should take heed (“Truth is, the press’ credibility is on trial here, too,” Oct. 4).

Journalism is almost defunct in this country. I see the goal of the New York Post is objectivity, and it hits the mark often. Other papers, TV and some radio do not. They are biased, and badly so.

I bet you all that I have that Sen. Dianne Feinstein would scream to the rafters if what she did to the Kavanaugh family was done to her. Her move was cowardly, and she is a bully. Joseph C. Tirrell Oceanport, NJ

Goldberg’s got it dead wrong. President Trump has not done Americans or the presidency any disservice by calling the news media an “enemy of the people.”

Why do journalists keep telling us that Trump is wrong about the media?

After this week, I think anyone could assert that the media are the enemy of decent people.

Most Americans are right to be scared after yet another good man and longtime public servant is basically destroyed, like Robert Bork and Clarence Thomas.

So save it, Goldberg. Trump is doing a great service to our country by standing in defense of decent human beings who are being fed to the lions of media propaganda machines. Karen Boushelle Cleveland, Ohio

Goldberg’s theorization about the press’ groupthink mentality, and its effect on seemingly smart people, is spot on. Most people do not have time to research all the facts, and so rely on different media outlets for their news.

When the media slant the news, knowingly omit key points or report outrageous accusations as facts, smart people become stupid. They lose their ability to think critically and to reason and become a mob.

One thing on which I disagree with Goldberg: When Trump calls out the press as an “enemy of the people,” he is talking to all of us “deplorables.” He is playing to his base and doesn’t need to temper his rhetoric so the press will be happy with him. The press will never be happy with him. Bob Fishman Somers

After I read Goldberg’s column on the press’ credibility, I had a good laugh.

Does anyone really think that any liberal outlet or newspaper is going to call out their own team? Absolutely not. Ron Zajicek Cortlandt Manor
