KY Y ME A RIVER

Knicks fans weep as Irving says he’s committed to Celts

It’s time to put those “Kyrie Irving” Knicks jerseys on hold.

The Celtics point guard doesn’t sound like a man with a plan to hit the free-agent market next summer, instead telling fans at a team event he intends on re-signing with Boston.

“If you guys will have me back, I plan on re-signing here,” Irving said to a loud cheer Thursday night at TD Garden.

And the five-time All-Star may not have just been trying to please the crowd, either.

Irving also has made the message that he’s committed to the team long term clear to Celtics ownership in recent months, according to The Athletic.

The West Orange, N.J., product would be very much on the Knicks’ radar next summer if does not sign an extension with the Celtics. The Knicks have been trying to free up cap space to sign at least one max-contract player in 2019, and the idea of pairing Irving with Kristaps Porzingis and Kevin Knox is tantalizing.

But Irving may never get to the open market if he follows through on his word. Irving, entering the final year of a five-year, $94 million contract, is set to begin his second season with the Celtics since being acquired from the Cavaliers.

Irving missed the end of last season, and the playoffs, dealing with a knee injury, but has expressed his excitement about finally teaming up with a healthy Gordon Hayward, along with the young Celtics stars Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown, to chase an NBA title in Boston — at least for this season and potentially for more.

The Celtics were one game away from the NBA Finals without Irving and Hayward last year, and now with LeBron James in the Western Conference, they could be a juggernaut in the East for the foreseeable future.

“Who wouldn’t want to be part of [Boston’s future], honestly?” Irving told ESPN last week. “The future is very, very bright in Boston. Even if I ever think about that thought of going elsewhere, it’s like, what are you thinking? We’re pretty f’in good here. We’re pretty f’in good not just for this year but for years to come. I’m looking forward to that.”

And soon, it may be official.
