Upon further review: Yanks lose

- By KEN DAVIDOFF

The Yankees nearly put together a comeback for the ages Tuesday night at Yankee Stadium. The death knell came via modern technology, with everyone on the field waiting for a sign before they could alternately celebrate or grieve. After scoring two runs against Red Sox closer Craig Kimbrel in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Yankees saw their 2018 season end when their replay challenge on Gleyber Torres’ soft grounder didn’t work, thereby affirming their 4-3 defeat to Boston in American League Division Series Game 4 and a 3-1 overall loss. The Bosox will face the defending champion Astros in the AL Championship Series.

With Yankees on first and second and two outs, the rookie Torres tapped a shot to former Yankee Eduardo Nunez at third base. Nunez’s relay across the diamond appeared to beat Torres by about a half a step, and first-base umpire Fieldin Culbreth called him out. As Kimbrel and his catcher Christian Vazquez embraced, however, Yankees manager Aaron Boone immediately signaled for a replay challenge, and the umpires convened near the visitors’ dugout.

The review lasted just over a minute before the officials at Major League Baseball’s Manhattan control center upheld the call. No one on the Yankees disagreed.

“I was out,” Torres conceded. He added: “It’s tough. It’s a really bad moment for right now, but I’ll continue to work hard.”
