Cuomo still a chicken

Other govs debate

- By NOLAN HICKS

They’re not chicken! Governors across the United States with commanding leads in the polls are still giving their opponents a chance to debate — a scene not shared in New York, where Gov. Cuomo refuses to share a stage with GOP challenger Marc Molinaro.

Massachusetts GOP Gov. Charlie Baker debated Democratic opponent Jay Gonzalez, even though Baker led in the most recent poll by 39 points.

In Pennsylvania, Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf sparred with GOP challenger Scott Wagner in a debate hosted by “Jeopardy’s” Alex Trebek.

Over the last month, the closest poll shows Wolf leading by 48-36 percent.

Maryland Republican Gov. Larry Hogan faced off against Democrat Ben Jealous, the former head of the NAACP.

Surveys of Maryland’s voters show Hogan ahead by at least 15 points.

Even in states where one party dominates, like California and Texas, the heavily favored gubernatorial candidates still agreed to give voters at least one face-to-face debate.

But Cuomo, who leads Molinaro by more than 20 points in every public poll, isn’t budging. The governor’s campaign so far is refusing to attend at least two debates, one offered by cable’s NY1 and another by New York City’s League of Women Voters.

The Post on Thursday questioned Cuomo’s refusal to debate by depicting him in a chicken costume with a headline asking: “What are you afraid of, Gov?”

Molinaro’s campaign is now offering “duck whistles” for donors who give $20.18, a reference to the election year.

“Good governors — governors proud of their records — agree to debates,” Molinaro spokesman William O’Reilly said.

“Guess which Governor Cuomo is, quack, quack?”

In a statement, the Cuomo campaign declined to provide information about any potential debate and instead criticized The Post.
