Goldman draws rant from irate Iron Man

- By CARLETON ENGLISH cenglish@nypost.com

This irate mining honcho is bringing down the hammer on Wall Street.

The chief executive of an iron ore giant — claiming that a Goldman Sachs analyst gave him the shaft with a faulty profit estimate — went on a bizarre tirade on a Friday conference call, warning, “You can run, but you can’t hide.”

“You guys should resign for your lack of knowledge of things,” ranted Lourenco Goncalves, chief executive of ClevelandCliffs, the nation’s biggest iron ore producer. “It’s not like you don’t understand our business ... you don’t understand your own business.”

“You are a disaster,” Goncalves added. “You are an embarrassment to your parents.”

Goncalves likewise blasted investors betting against the company as he talked about plans to buy back company stock.

“We are going to screw these guys so badly that I don’t believe that they will be able to only resign,” he said. “They will have to commit suicide. So we are going to screw these guys so badly that it will be fun to watch.”

In an interview with Bloomberg later in the day, Goncalves said he was set off by a research note sent by Goldman Sachs analyst Matthew Korn ahead of Friday’s call, which said the company “modestly missed estimates.”

Korn referred to Cleveland-Cliffs’ diluted earnings of 64 cents a share, which fell short of analyst projections of 66 cents. Goncalves said the basic measure of 67 cents a share was the correct one to use.

Cleveland-Cliffs’ stock dropped 3.8 percent, to $11.05.

“Matthew Korn, if you are in the call, it is still 10:42, why you don’t ask a freaking question?” Goncalves had said early on the call.

He concluded with a threat to Korn, noting that the two were soon scheduled to meet at a conference:

“Matthew Korn from Goldman Sachs, you can run, but you can’t hide.”

The tirade against Korn was surprising to some because Korn said he expects the stock to “outperform” in light of ClevelandCliffs’ newly announced dividend.

Reps from Goldman Sachs declined to comment.
