Deadly doors-off heli tours promoted – at a discount
The helicopter-tour company behind the deadly doors-off flight that crashed into the East River in March is still advertising doors-off trips, now at sharp discounts — with no mention of the tragedy or the ongoing investigation, Sen. Chuck Schumer said Sunday.
“Experience New York City like never before from our doors-off helicopter photo experience,” crows one social-media ad for FlyNYON, pushing the company’s 40-percent sale on the flights.
Neither the ad nor FlyNYON’s Web site informs would-be customers that one of the company’s doors-off flights plummeted into the East River near Gracie Mansion earlier this year, killing all five passengers when they couldn’t free themselves from their harnesses as the craft quickly filled with water. The pilot survived.
“NYON is really showing its gall by advertising, by looking for discounts in October . . . and not waiting for the federal investigation,” Schumer railed in a press briefing.
“Five young people died and they continue to fly. That’s wrong, very wrong.”
The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash and the Federal Aviation Administration is reviewing doors-off flights.
A call seeking comment from FlyNYON — which has since deleted the ads for the sale — went unanswered.
