Nunez throws support behind Yankees’ developing Andujar
BOSTON — The good scouts know tools and how a player projects. The analytics arms of organizations understand numbers. However, nobody knows players better than players.
According to Red Sox infielder Eduardo Nunez, the Yankees would be wise to let Miguel Andujar grow and prosper in The Bronx.
“I think he can be a superstar, and not later, soon,” the former Yankee said Monday before the Red Sox worked out at Fenway Park ahead of Tuesday night’s Game 1 of the World Series against the Dodgers. “That’s because of his hitting. He can play in the big time.”
Andujar will finish in the top three in the AL Rookie of the Year race based on a .297 average, 27 homers and 92 RBIs. On the other hand, Andujar committed 15 errors (second on the Yankees to Gleyber Torres’ 17) and wasn’t in the lineup for Game 4 of the ALDS when CC Sabathia started against the Red Sox.
Nunez, who has had his difficulties in the infield where he has made 82 errors in 588 big-league games, had some advice for Andujar to improve with the glove and arm.
“Learn, listen and work hard,’’ Nunez said of the 23-year-old Andujar, whom he knows from their native Dominican Republic and when they were together in the Yankees organization.
When the World Series shifts from New England to Hollywood, the number of celebrities in the seats will increase. So, too, will the temperature. And outfielder Mookie Betts could return to the position where he started his professional career: second base.
With Games 3 and 4 (and five if necessary) scheduled for Dodger Stadium where the designated hitter won’t be used, the Red Sox are toying with playing the likely AL MVP right fielder at second base in order to get J.D. Martinez’s bat in the lineup in right field.
“He was good at second base in the time he was up the first year. I think just turning double plays he was a little off,” Red Sox shortstop Xan
der Bogaerts said. “I think now, being more experienced … with that slide thing at second base, now you can’t do that. He’ll be much better if he plays there.’’
Alex Cora announced lefty David Price will start Game 2 on Wednesday, but that is as far as he went.
“We will see where we are at,” Cora said of the Game 3 and Game 4 starters. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said lefty HyunJin Ryu will start Game 2 on Wednesday and righthander Walker Buehler is the starter for Game 3 on Friday in LA.
