Losing a foreign experience to Barkley

- By DAN MARTIN

In his final two seasons at Penn State, Saquon Barkley lost a total of five games.

Through his first seven NFL games, Barkley has seen the Giants lose six times.

“It sucks,’’ Barkley said Thursday of the Giants’ season. “I’m not gonna lie to you. It sucks being 1-6 right now. Everybody in the locker room will tell you that. It sounds crazy, but everything happens for a reason. You have to continue to believe in the process. We still have [nine] games left. You never know what can happen.” Probably not much good. In the meantime, he continues to impress not only the Giants, but opponents including Washington running back Adrian Peterson.

Barkley and the Giants will see the Redskins on Sunday.

Peterson told reporters Wednesday he has liked what he has seen from the rookie.

“For me, I want to see what he’s going to do once he gets into the NFL,” Peterson said. “I was like, ‘OK, this kid’s got something.’ Just keep watching, keep watching and each time I see him I’m like, ‘OK, this kid can be really good.’ ” Barkley took note of the praise. “He’s one of the best running backs to ever play in this game — a future Hall of Famer,” Barkley said. “I admire his game and how he plays. For him to say that about me, especially being a young guy in the league, definitely means a lot to me.”

Barkley followed up perhaps his best game as a pro — posting 130 yards rushing and 99 more receiving against the Eagles — with a rough one in Monday’s loss to Atlanta. The Falcons held Barkley to 43 yards on the ground, though he had nine catches for 51 yards in the latest defeat.

And now Barkley has seen the front office trade two key pieces to the defense, with the deals that sent Eli Apple to New Orleans and Damon Harrison to Detroit.

“I wouldn’t necessarily say we’re building towards the future,’’ Barkley said. “Obviously, I guess you can say that with the draft picks, but at the end of the day, we still have [nine] games left in the season. We’ve got to find a way to win. No matter what, whether if there’s trades that they believe in to help us win now, we’ve got to find a way to execute in games and win some games.’’
