Connect the dots in Bosox DH puzzle

-

AS A way to get the bats of DH J.D. Martinez and his regular outfield of Andrew Benintendi, Mookie Betts and Jackie Bradley Jr. into the lineup, Boston manager Alex Cora has weighed moving Betts to second base, which was his primary position in the minor leagues.

In recent years, when teams have made this type of decision, there often has been a “three degrees of Mike Napoli” feel.

In 2016, Napoli was the Indians’ regular DH, but when the series switched to Wrigley Field (no DH in the NL park), Cleveland manager Terry Francona put Napoli at first and Carlos Santana in left, though Santana had played just one regular season game in the outfield (in 2012 for four innings).

In 2013 for the Red Sox, David Ortiz moved from DH to first base to take their regular first baseman — Napoli — out of the lineup in St. Louis. Oritz then, like Martinez now, was such a big bat that keeping him in the lineup was imperative, so in the 2004 World Series, Big Papi moved to first in St. Louis at the expense of Doug Mientkiewicz and in 2007 with Kevin Youkilis sent to the bench in Colorado.

In 2011, the Rangers used regular DH Michael Young to play first base all four World Series games in St. Louis. That impacted their regular first baseman, current Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland. It also impacted Texas’ regular catcher, who also played some first base — Napoli.
