BOXING: Jacobs claims IBF title Daniel Jacobs won the IBF middleweig­ht title Saturday night at the Hulu Theater at Madison Square Garden, pulling out a thrilling split decision over Sergiy Derevyanch­enko.

Jacobs (35-2, 29 KOs) scored a firstround knockdown and that helped him build just enough of a lead to hold on in a tight finish in which both fighters were swinging wildly across the late rounds.

He won 115-112 on two judges’ cards, and Derevyanch­enko (12-1) won 114-113 on the other card.

“Hats off to Sergiy. I knew he was a true competitor,” Jacobs said. “I knew he was going to be hard so I had to dig deep.”

NBA: Celtics hand Pistons 1st loss Jaylen Brown scored 19 points, Marcus Morris added 18 and visiting Boston handed Detroit its first loss of the season, 109-89. Andre Drummond had 18 points and eight rebounds, and Stanley Johnson scored a season-high 16 for Detroit.

NHL: Matthews hurt in Leafs win Jake Gardiner and Kasperi Kapanen scored in a late 26-second span and the Maple Leafs overcame the loss of center Auston Matthews to beat the visiting Jets, 3-2.

Matthews left in the second period after injuring his left shoulder absorbing a hit from defenseman Jacob Trouba.
