Standing with Jewish NYers

- Ruth Weissman and Max Jaeger

Mayor de Blasio on Sunday vowed that the city will protect its Jewish community “with our lives’’ in the wake of Saturday’s deadly attack on a Pittsburgh synagogue.

“We will defend with our lives the synagogues of this city and the community of this city,” he said during a press conference at Temple Emanu-el on the Upper East Side. “We stand with you. We will not let anyone harm you.”

There are no credible or specific threats against Big Apple Jewish institutions, but “we will be vigilant. You’ll see a very strong and clear NYPD pres- ence in the coming days outside Jewish community gathering places,” de Blasio said.

The mayor’s remarks came one day after a madman shouting anti-Semitic remarks shot up the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh, killing 11.

“When any house of worship is desecrated, we all come together,” said Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, one of several faith leaders who assembled outside Temple Emanu-el on Fifth Avenue.

Potasnik said one of the first calls he received Saturday was from Timothy Cardinal Dolan offering his condolences.

“A violent attack on any hu- man life is bad, horrible, awful, nauseating,’’ Dolan said at the press conference. “A violent attack on people who are at prayer, in a sanctuary that is characterized by peace and unity, is worse. And a violent attack upon a people, the Jewish people, who have suffered for centuries adds to the segregation and horror.”

Pope Francis also weighed in on the tragedy, saying, “All of us are wounded by this inhuman act of violence.’’

Gov. Cuomo announced Sunday that state buildings would fly flags at half-staff from Monday to Sunday, Nov. 4.
