You could be in for a long wait to know the results of the midterm elections and which party ends up controlling the House and Senate.
But polling places close earlier in some states than others — and they could provide a hint of things to come as the night progresses.
6 p.m.
Kentucky’s 6th Congressional District: President Trump won this district near Lexington by 15 points. Democrats are fielding retired Marine fighter pilot Amy McGrath against three-term incumbent Andy Barr. The race is rated as a toss-up. A Democratic victory could be an early sign of the blue wave.
Indiana Senate: Trump won Indiana by 19 points, but incumbent Democratic Sen. Joe Donnelly is polling even with GOP challenger Mike Braun. A loss for the Democrat would make it hard for the party to take control of the Senate.
7 p.m.
Virginia’s 7th CD: Republican Rep. David Brat — best known for toppling former House Majority Leader Eric Cantor — is battling former CIA officer Abigail Spanberger in a race that’s considered a toss-up. Democrats winning here would suggest the party is doing well in smaller-city suburbs, a crucial battleground.
7:30 p.m
West Virginia Senate: Sen. Joe Manchin, a Democrat seeking re-election in a state Trump carried by 42 points, has maintained a steady small lead over Republican Patrick Morrisey. A loss by Manchin would be a bad early sign for Dems.
Ohio governor: The race between Democrat Richard Cordray and Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine is a toss-up. Trump won the state by 8 points.
North Carolina’s 9th CD: This seat appeared to be safe until incumbent GOP Rep. Robert Pittenger lost the primary to a hard-line conservative, pastor Mark Harris. Democrats nominated Iraq War veteran Dan McCready. It’s rated a toss-up.
8 p.m.
Florida governor: Democrat Andrew Gillum is facing Republican Rep. Ron DeSantis in a state Trump has visited numerous times.
Florida Senate: Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson is trying to fend off outgoing GOP Gov. Rick Scott.
Missouri Senate: Democratic incumbent Sen. Claire McCaskill was at the top of GOP target lists after Trump won the state by 18 points, and her race against GOP Attorney General Josh Hawley is rated a toss-up. The GOP can basically lock down the Senate majority by defeating McCaskill.
New Jersey Senate: Democratic Sen. Robert Menendez, dogged by ethics issues, got a scare from GOP rival Bob Hugin, but late polls give Menendez a double-digit lead.
9 p.m.
New York’s 11th CD: Incumbent Staten Island GOP Rep. Dan Donovan is facing an unexpectedly spirited challenge from Democrat Max Rose, an Afghani- stan war vet.
New York’s 19th CD: Hudson Valley GOP Rep. John Faso is in the race of his political career against lawyer Antonio Delgado, who has dramatically outraised and outspent the Republican.
New York’s 22nd CD: Upstate GOP Rep. Claudia Tenney is in a tight race against Democratic Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi.
New York’s 27th CD: The race in the Trump-friendly rural Buffalo environs suddenly became competitive after GOP Rep. Chris Collins was indicted for insider trading. He remains the narrow favorite against Democrat Nate McMurray.
North Dakota Senate: Democrat Heidi Heitkamp could be ousted by GOP Rep. Kevin Cramer. The seat is considered the Democrats’ most endangered.
Texas Senate: Republican Sen. Ted Cruz is in such a close race against Democratic Rep. Beto O’Rourke, who has raised an astonishing $70 million, that he called in Trump for help even though the president had branded him “Lyin’ Ted” during the 2016 race.
Wisconsin Gov.: GOP Gov. Scott Walker is in a tight race against Democrat Tony Evers. They were tied in the final poll.
10 p.m.
Nevada Senate: Incumbent GOP Sen. Dean Heller is facing a stiff challenge from freshman Democratic Rep. Jacky Rosen. Hillary Clinton won Nevada in 2016 and Heller’s sometimes-testy relationship with Trump has not endeared him to GOP activists.
Utah’s 4th CD: Trump is deeply unpopular among Mormon voters, potentially giving Democrats an opening in the traditionally conservative Salt Lake City suburbs. GOP Rep. Mia Love faces Democratic Salt Lake County Mayor Ben McAdams.
11 p.m.
California’s 25th CD: This northern LA area is one of six suburban California districts where Trump’s deep unpopularity means Republican incumbents are in big trouble. Here, Rep. Steve Knight is facing off against Democrat Katie Hill.
California’s 50th CD: Indicted GOP Rep. Duncan Hunter — who faces charges related to alleged misuse of campaign funds — goes against Democrat Ammar Campa-Najjar.
