NHL: Boyle gets hat trick vs. Pens

Brian Boyle scored three times for his first career hat trick, and the Devils beat the Penguins 5-1 in Pittsburgh.

Boyle got his natural hat trick on “Hockey Fights Cancer” night in Pittsburgh. It included two power-play goals and two redirectio­ns in front of the net.

Will Butcher had a goal and two assists for New Jersey, and Travis Zajac scored his fourth goal. The Devils stopped a three-game slide with their first road win.

NFL: Mariota spoils Cooper’s debut

Marcus Mariota threw two touchdown passes and ran for another score after fumbling on Tennessee’s first two possession­s, and the Titans spoiled Amari Cooper’s Dallas debut with a 28-14 victory over the Cowboys in Arlington, Texas.

Kevin Byard sparked the sluggish Ti- tans with an end-zone intercepti­on of Dak Prescott and celebrated T.O.-style. Former NFL rushing leader Chris Johnson, who played the bulk of his career with the Titans and a season with the Jets, announced his retirement.

ETC.: USOC punishes leadership

The U.S. Olympic Committee is moving to revoke USA Gymnastics’ status as the governing body for the sport at the Olympic level, meting out the nuclear option to an organizati­on that has botched its own reorganiza­tion in the wake of a sex-abuse scandal involving former team doctor Larry Nassar.

In an open letter Monday, USOC CEO Sarah Hirshland said the gymnastics community “[deserves] better,” and that the challenges facing USA Gymnastics are more than it is capable of overcoming as currently constructe­d.
