Roberts’ future remains up in air

-

THE DODGERS have until Wednesday — 10 days after the World Series — to decide on the 2019 option of manager Dave Roberts. The sides, though, continued to talk about a longterm extension instead. There was no deal imminent early in the day Monday, but there was optimism expressed that an extension would ultimately be forged. Meanwhile, Dodgers GM Farhan Zaidi has emerged as the Giants’ top choice to run baseball operations and San Francisco was awaiting his decision, which could come as early as Tuesday. Tampa Bay VP of baseball operations Chaim Bloom, the runner-up for the Mets’ GM job, is viewed as the Giants’ main fallback option.

➤ Even with Clayton Kershaw having re-upped with the Dodgers, the freeagent market remains deep in lefty starters such as Yankees favorites Patrick Corbin and J.A. Happ plus Dallas Keuchel, Gio Gonzalez, CC Sabathia, Wade Miley and HyunJin Ryu if he rejects the $17.9 million qualifying offer.

One of the best pitchers in Japan, Yusei Kikuchi, will soon join that list and when he does he will be represented by Scott Boras, who also has Keuchel, Gonzalez and Ryu.

Kikuchi is expected to be posted by the Seibu Lions as soon as this week. He is 27 and is known for having an array of strong pitches as opposed to wipeout stuff. Kikuchi was 14-4 with a 3.08 ERA this past year and for his career he is 74-48 with a 3.22 ERA.

➤ Brodie Van Wagenen’s four-year contract with the Mets was for $10 million, one source said. Another said: “Right in that ballpark” without confirming whether that was the exact amount.
