Another Brutal Shooting: The Massacre in California

-

It is believed that Ian David Long, the alleged killer of 12 people in a California bar, had PTSD (“War Vet Massacre,” Nov. 9).

He was a five-year Marine veteran, last stationed in Afghanistan. He had no prior criminal record.

This has happened before, and signals the necessity of treatment for veterans upon return from service.

There is also a need for all gun owners to register their firearms with the local police, take a written test on gun safety, a performance test and a vision test.

In 1791, when the Second Amendment was enacted, guns were “muskets” needing up to 15 seconds to reload. Manny Martin Manhattan

We need to stop blaming each other for the problems in this country and come together in search of answers.

When you look at the horrified faces of children running out of a school because of a shooting rampage, it is because we failed to protect them.

When young people die while having fun at a bar, it’s because we are divided, instead of united for a better cause. George Hill Beverly Hills, Calif.

I was deeply saddened to hear of the shooting at a California country bar where 12 people were killed, including a police officer.

It was very deadly — one of the worst shootings of 2018. We send our thoughts and prayers to those affected. Paul Bacon Hallandale Beach, Fla.

In 1979, a 16-year-old girl named Brenda Spencer shot up a school in San Diego, killing two adults and injuring eight children. When asked why she did it, she said one of the reasons was she did not like Mondays and wanted to die.

Little did we know that incident in San Diego 39 years ago was just a harbinger of things to come.

What is our society going to do to prevent these incidents from happening for the next 39 years? Matthew Galcik Montauk

The latest mass shooting at a bar in California, which left multiple people dead and others injured, is yet another part of a pattern of innocent people being shot by a deranged person.

Nobody who is mentally unstable should be permitted access to weapons. Far too many people in this country have guns who shouldn’t.

Our thoughts and prayers go out the victims of this horrible shooting, as well as to their families. This carnage must cease. John Amato Fresh Meadows
