Trump at ‘war’ with France

- Yaron Steinbuch

President Trump on Tuesday launched a new attack on French President Emmanuel Macron, saying that Parisians were “starting to learn German” before the United States came to their rescue in both world wars.

“Emmanuel Macron suggests building its own army to protect Europe against the U.S., China and Russia. But it was Germany in World Wars One & Two – How did that work out for France?” the president tweeted.

“They were starting to learn German in Paris before the U.S. came along. Pay for NATO or not!”

The French leader (inset) earlier last week said Europe needed its own military to reduce reliance on Washington for defense. He also said Europe must protect itself against US, Russian and Chinese cyberthreats.

On Tuesday, a top adviser to Macron said the French position has been “clarified.”

The official said Macron explained the European-army matter to Trump, stressing that France was not choosing between a European defense mechanism and multilateral organizations, such as NATO.

Trump also took offense at the heat he’s taken for skipping a rainy ceremony honoring GIs killed during World War I last weekend.

“Speech next day at American Cemetary in pouring rain! Little reported-Fake News!” he tweeted, though that address was widely covered.
