HS shooter in jail fight

Florida school shooting suspect Nikolas Cruz attacked a detention officer at the Broward County jail, authorities said Wednesday.

Cruz, 20, assaulted Sgt. Raymond Beltran at around 6 p.m. Tuesday after he was told to “not drag his sandals around” while walking in a jail dayroom, sheriff ’s spokeswoman Veda Coleman-Wright said.

Cruz has been charged with aggravated assault on an officer, battery on an officer and use of an “electric or chemical weapon against an officer” because he allegedly wrestled the guard’s stun gun from him and tried to use it, according to jail records.

Cruz is facing the death penalty in the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland that killed 17 people and wounded 17 others.

He pleaded not guilty, but his lawyers say he would plead guilty in exchange for a life prison sentence.

Cruz’s court-appointed lawyers had no comment.
