Musk’s West LA tunnel plan going dark

- By NICOLAS VEGA

A group of Los Angeles locals have buried El on Mus k’ s plan to dig another high-speed passenger tunnel under the City of Angels.

Musk’s Boring Co. gave up on its effort to excavate a 2.7-mile tunnel in West LA to settle litigation brought by neighborhood groups opposed to the project, the two sides said in a joint statement Wednesday.

The announcement came six months after Musk, the billionaire chief executive officer of Tesla, Space X and Boring Co., appeared to promote the project’s benefits.

Musk at the time said rides on his 150-mph Loop mass transit system would cost as little as $1 per person, carry 16 passengers per car and would help with the city’s notorious gridlock.

“It’s the only way we can think of to address the chronic traffic is- sues,” he said in March.

But opponents accused the billionaire of trying to evade a lengthy environmental review required for such projects by seeking an exemption based on what his company insisted was a small-scale demonstration of a wider concept.

Precise terms of the court settlement were confidential, according to a company official along with a lawyer for plaintiffs of the lawsuit.

“The parties ... have amicably settled the matter,” the statement said. “The Boring Co. is no longer seeking the development of the test tunnel and instead seeks to construct a tunnel at Dodger Stadium.”

Loop will be able to make the 13-mile trip from Dodger Stadium to Los Angeles International Airport in eight minutes, according to the Boring Co.
