Time near for Knicks to make Trier call

- By MARC BERMAN

Undrafted rookie Allonzo Trier’s 45-day limit on an NBA roster comes up around Dec. 15 — pending any future cancelled practices, according to sources.

At that juncture, Trier’s twoway G-League contract will be converted to a mainstream NBA contract, but it doesn’t have to be for his $838,000 minimum.

The Knicks never used their $3.3 million biannual exception and could use a portion of it to ink Trier. One issue is whether the Knicks can negotiate a multi-year pact with a team option, if they give him more than the minimum.

In 2 ¹/₂ weeks, the Knicks will have to make a roster cut. Combo guard Ron Baker and 7-foot center Luke Kornet are the two likely candidates unless the team trades away a player, such as Damyean Dotson for draft picks.

Kornet, who was recalled Thursday, was cleaning it up in the G-League for Westchester, averaging 18 points and 8.9 rebounds in 10 games. The Knicks are more in need of depth at center than shooting guard.

Baker is regarded as a flawless, enthusiastic teammate but the Knicks vastly overpaid him when signing him to a two-year, $9.5 million deal on July 1, 2017. With his tenacity, the former Wichita State stud was in the rotation early when Emmanuel Mudiay was hurt but now comes in for just garbage time.

Baker played 5:34 in Wednesday’s blowout loss in Philly, missing on a runner in his lone shot attempt. His 3-point shooting has not improved and was hampered by last season’s shoulder surgery after he was an undrafted rookie revelation.

Meanwhile, Trier, the rookie from Arizona, is averaging 11.8 points on 48.7 percent shooting and hasn’t spent a minute in the G-League. He had a rare off night in Philly, shooting 3-of-11 for eight points and was a teamworst minus-25. That came after his 24-point, 10-rebound, sevenassist game in Detroit on Tuesday.

“All the credit goes to Scott Perry and his staff because right now I have a two-way player that I can depend on to finish games,” coach David Fizdale said. “There’s not many of those guys running around out there right now.’’
