Dallas cop hit with murder charge in apt. slay

-

A white police officer who shot and killed an unarmed black man after she mistakenly walked into his Dallas apartment in September was indicted Friday on murder charges, authorities said.

Amber Guyger, 30, had originally been arrested on manslaughter charges for shooting Botham Jean at an apartment complex where they both lived.

Guyger, who has since been fired from the Dallas police force, told investigators that she walked into Jean’s apartment because she thought it was her own and opened fire when she mistook him for an intruder as he ap- peared in the darkness.

Guyger’s arrest for manslaughter drew criticism and protests from some in the Dallas community who believed the charge was too lenient.

Dallas County District Attorney Faith Johnson said after Guyger’s arrest that the charges could be upgraded at a later date.

“When you look at the facts of this case, we thought that it was murder all along,” Johnson said Friday at a press conference.

Jean, 26, was a native of St. Lucia and attended college in Arkansas. He was working for an accounting firm in Dallas at the time of his death.

His family joined Johnson at the press conference on Friday.

“I truly believe that she inflicted tremendous evil on my son,” Jean’s mother, Allison, said. “He didn’t deserve it. He was seated in his own apartment.”
