Bowles keeps starting QB under wraps

The Jets will travel to Tennessee with gamesmanship on their side.

Coach Todd Bowles indicated he has already made up his mind as to who will start at quarterback Sunday against the Titans, but won’t reveal it until game day.

“I’m kind of decided, but I’ll probably make it public Sunday,” Bowles said Friday.

Sam Darnold is officially listed as questionable with his foot injury after being limited in practice for a third straight day. The rookie has been inactive the past two games, but Bowles wouldn’t say whether he would be active even if he doesn’t start Sunday. “He looks good,” Bowles said. Josh McCown had been on the injury report all week with back and thumb injuries, but moved to a full participant for the first time Friday, making him ready to start if need be.

The Jets have been talking about talking, they just haven’t actually talked enough when it matters. Leonard Williams pointed to a communication issue that has led to breakdowns in the run defense, which has been crushed for 427 yards the past two games.

“What has to change is just doing it,” Williams said. “This isn’t our first time noticing that it’s been small details that we need to clean up and communicate better and stuff like that. … We can’t wait this late into the season to start saying, ‘Now we need to start communicating.’ The thing is, we do say it all year round. It’s just sometimes we don’t transition it, sometimes we don’t carry it over into practice or carry it over into games.”

The Jets could use more than five offensive linemen Sunday.

With left guard James Carpenter out last week — and now on injured reserve — Spencer Long filled his spot while Jonotthan Harrison played center

“We’ve tweaked a little bit, but they’ll both see snaps,” Bowles said.

Asked what that meant, Bowles declined to get into specifics, but said Dakota Dozier would “play some,” and Brent Qvale “has some snaps in there.”

“We have certain things for different people,” Bowles said. “You may see some changes. If plays don’t come up, then you may not.”

Safety Marcus Maye (shoulder/thumb) will miss his second straight game. Bowles said he did not have any clarity yet on Maye’s status for the rest of the season, but acknowledged surgery was possible.
