Cashman: 11 teams checked in on Gray

- By KEN DAVIDOFF

STAMFORD, Conn. — In the Yankees’ big picture, Sonny Gray might wind up as part of a solution. Or he might just be a self-correction in and of himself. Either way, Brian Cashman insisted Friday morning the beleaguered right-hander will be traded for a worthwhile return.

In between trips rappelling down the Landmark Building, Cashman said he had received inquiries from 11 teams about Gray, whose 2018 struggles with the Yankees prompted the general manager to declare publicly he would jettison the pitcher this offseason.

“I’ve had a lot of interesting dialogue, whether it’s for prospects, whether it’s for major league, our need for their need,” Cash- man said. “Whether it’s part of a complicated, larger situation that involves prospects and major leaguers going both ways. So I think we’ve had a little bit of experience with all aspects of it.”

Among the 11 teams believed to be interested in Gray are the Reds, Padres, Brewers, Rangers, Braves and Athletics, who dealt him to the Yankees in July 2017.

Asked whether the Yankees spoke with the Mariners about their old pal Robinson Cano, now seemingly headed to the Mets in a bombshell trade, Cashman said: “It’s a player with another club, so I don’t want to say. But certainly my job is to dissect every opportunity that’s available in the marketplace, and [Mariners general manager] Jerry [ Dipoto] and I clearly have a good rapport, as I’m sure he does with every general manager in the game because he’s a dealmaker.

“I’ve explored a lot of things that are available on his team, obviously, because he’s living to fight another day, and we’ll continue to engage them as well as every other team that’s not named Boston.”

Earlier this month, Cashman and Dipoto completed the trade that made James Paxton a Yankee.

Cashman said he would tender contracts to all of the players on his 40-man roster by Friday’s midnight deadline.
