New guy Jenkins earns Fiz’s trust from the get-go

- By MARC BERMAN

John Jenkins played for three NBA teams from 2012-17, logging 148 games. It wasn’t enough for the 27-year-old shooting guard.

Jenkins, known for his 3-point touch, took the offbeat path of playing in the Spanish League last season to get more experience.

“I wanted to develop,’’ Jenkins told The Post. “I’d been in the league five years and … I don’t have many minutes under my belt. I need to go out and get minutes and the [Spanish League] was consid- ered the second-best in the world. I saw an opportunity to get better, compete and try something new. It’s part of the reason I’m back here.”

Jenkins tore up the G-League for the Westchester Knicks this season, then signed a 10-day contract this month with Washington. But the Wizards obtained Jabari Parker and Bobby Portis at the trade deadline, making Jenkins expendable. He joined the Knicks on Monday in Cleveland on a 10-day contract to fill one of their three open roster slots.

Coach David Fizdale didn’t waste any team using Jenkins with the Knicks’ 16-game losing streak on the line. He inserted him for a sixminute stretch in the third quarter Monday when he hit his first three shots and scored seven points on two nifty pull-ups in the lane and a 3-pointer.

Then Fizdale inserted Jenkins for the final possession, needing a 3pointer to tie. Jennkins launched a corner 3 that looked fluid, but the shot didn’t drop.

“Coach put me in right away and trusted me,’’ Jenkins said. “It’s big for me. I’m pretty shocked. This hasn’t happened much in my career, honestly. I’m grateful.”

➤ During the single-season franchise-record 17-game losing streak, Fizdale said he has heard from his coaching friends, but not from mentor Pat Riley.

“A lot of guys reach out to me,’’ Fizdale said. “The latest one was Ron Rothstein, who had five wins at the All-Star break his first year in Miami. He gave me a pep talk. I kind of feel like, it’s not getting to me. I’m not letting it get to me. And I won’t let them focus on it either. … We’re just focused on our improvement and getting a win where we can get it.”

➤ Kevin Knox will compete in the Rising Stars Challenge on Friday but has made his decision to skip All-Star Saturday’s Dunk Contest featuring Dennis Smith Jr., his Knicks teammate. Knox decided to accept an invitation to watch his Kentucky Wildcats host No. 1 Tennessee in a big showdown.
