FRIENDLY FIRE TRAGEDY

Cop killed by colleagues shooting att robber bb

- Mark Moore

Detective Brian Simonsen, 42, was killed last night in a tragic case of friendly fire when fellow cops shot at a robber who pointed what turned out to be a fake gun at them at this Queens store. Another officer was wounded.

Retired astronaut Mark Kelly is running for the Senate seat once held by John McCain in Arizona.

“I care about people,” Kelly said in a video released on his Twitter page Tuesday. “I care about the state of Arizona. I care about this nation. So because of that, I’ve decided I’m launching a campaign for the United States Senate.”

Kelly — the husband of former Arizona Rep. Gabby Giffords — said the state faces “incredibly challenging issues,” citing health care, wage stagnation, job growth and the effects of climate change.

“Partisanship and polarization and gerrymandering and corporate money have ruined our politics, and it’s divided us,” said Kelly, 54.

Kelly, a naval aviator who spent more than 54 days in space for NASA and flew 39 combat mission in Operation Desert Storm, said he turned to politics after his wife was seriously wounded in a 2011 assassination attempt in Tucson. Six others were killed in the attack.

Kelly will seek the Democratic nomination in a special election in 2020 to fill the last two years of McCain’s term. Republican Martha McSally, appointed after McCain’s death, now holds the seat.
