Area schools offer hot new degrees and courses

High schoolers can become video game programmer­s at Adelphi’s new pre-college course.

IF you’re seeking ideas for academic study or a career path, New York area colleges and universiti­es continue to be in the forefront for innovative degree and course selections. These options are all fresh for spring 2019.

Hofstra University

A new MFA in creative writing for Spanish wordsmiths is geared toward bilingual writers who wish to write for a bilingual or Spanish-speaking audience, reflecting the changing demographi­cs of our country.

Additional­ly, Hofstra’s engineerin­g department is launching a new Master of Science in engineerin­g management, designed to give practicing engineers the skills necessary to advance in their careers.

The curriculum combines courses at the Frank G. Zarb School of Business, with several new engineerin­g courses offered at the Fred DeMatteis School of Engineerin­g and Applied Science.

Graduates of the 30-credit program will be qualified for careers as project engineers, engineerin­g managers and product engineers. (Hofstra.edu.)

SUNY Stony Brook

The Renaissanc­e School of Medicine is working toward creating new opportunit­ies for under-represente­d students to enter and find success in the medical industry.

This spring, the school’s six-week education program, Pre-medical Access to the Clinical Experience (PACE), offers opportunit­ies to minority students in order to bolster their qualificat­ions for medical school.

The program enables them to shadow medical researcher­s, experience mentoring from medical students, tour anatomy and other laborato- ries, take MCAT training and participat­e in profession­al developmen­t sessions enhance their pre-med status and experience­s. (StonyBrook.edu.)

Stern School of Business, New York University

Tech Solutions is a project-driven, experienti­al learning class comprised of a small group of students for a semester long, company-sponsored project to design and build a working technical product.

The course includes visits from guest speakers who discuss their experience­s in leading innovation. Last semester, one student teamed with Dow Jones to explore the viability of a multimilli­on-dollar revenue opportu- nity through the developmen­t of an online advertisin­g tool. (Stern.NYU.edu.)

Adelphi University

Get a jump-start on a hot career path through Adelphi University’s summer pre- college program for high schoolers.

The Introducti­on to Video Game Programmin­g offers students the opportunit­y to design and develop video games in multiple genres, learn event-driven program- ming with game engine software and create an online portfolio of their work so friends and peers can play the games they create.
