DeB mum on Omar at shul

- By RICH CALDER

Mayor de Blasio visited a Brooklyn synagogue Thursday to declare that New York City is waging war on anti-Semitism — but didn’t mention US Rep. Ilhan Omar, the congresswoman who apologized this week for comments condemned as anti-Semitic.

De Blasio told an audience at the Kingsway Jewish Center that anti-Semitism is “alive and well in the world,” even in the city, where hate crimes against Jews are on the rise.

He never brought up Sunday’s tweet by Omar (D-Minn.), who sparked outrage by saying the relationship between the United States and Israel is “all about the Benjamins.” She later apologized. “Democrats and Republicans with equal fervor need to say Israel must ex- ist so Jewish people know they are always protected,” de Blasio said.

“I am progressive and I say this proudly: You can disagree with the government of Israel on any particular matter . . . but don’t do anything to attack the fundamental right for Israel to exist.”

In his remarks, Rabbi Joseph Potasnik, director of the New York Board of Rabbis, compared Omar’s comments to those made by Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke.

“If it is wrong for David Duke to say these things, it is wrong for Ilhan Omar to say these things,” he said.

NYPD Chief of Patrol Rodney Harrison said that as of Tuesday, there were 49 reports of hate crimes in the city, up from 32 over the same period last year. He added that nearly twothirds were anti-Semitic.
