SCHOOL BUS HIT-RUN
Bronx woman left to die
A woman was run over and killed in The Bronx Thursday by a school bus — whose operator then drove away from the scene, police said and video shows.
“He left like he didn’t care about anything,” said Kirk Jimenez, whose home surveillance system captured the tragedy. “The bus drivers go so fast. Kids live here and you can’t let them outside.”
The 68-year-old victim was in the crosswalk when she was hit by the yellow bus at around 9:50 a.m. at Havemeyer and Story avenues in Castle Hill.
Video shows the bus stopped at a stop sign as the woman begins crossing. But as she gets directly in front of the vehicle, the driver hits the gas, running her over and leaving her belongings strewn across the intersection.
The footage shows the bus slow down after the collision before moving out of the camera’s view.
Witnesses who called 911 reported the victim was left unconscious.
She was rushed to Jacobi Medical Center, but could not be saved, cops said.
Photographs from the crime scene show the victim’s dark-colored coat and a single shoe left behind.
The driver turned himself in to be questioned by police and claimed he thought he had “ran over a bag,” a lawenforcement source said.
It was not clear if there were children on board the bus at the time.
Area residents complained of the impunity with which bus drivers violate the rules.
“Havermeyer, this is a non-route for buses. They’re not supposed to pass by here, school buses,” said Thomas Martinez, 75, a retired Air Force in-flight refueling specialist.
