Hurlers shedding weight

- By GEORGE A. KING III

TAMPA — There are enough Yankees pitchers who reported to camp lighter than they were following the 2019 season to land a weight-loss endorsement.

According to righthanded reliever Chad Green, he dropped 10 pounds off his 6-foot-3 frame. Luis Severino said he shed 12 to 15 pounds.

Stephen Tarpley explained he proportioned his weight better, though didn’t lose any. CC Sabathia reported at 285 pounds. Tommy Kahnle was much slimmer than last season.

“I moved the weight around, got it off my gut. I changed my routine and ate better,’’ said the left-handed Tarpley, a candidate for one of the two bullpen openings. “I improved everything. We will see how things work out.’’

After the Tigers punished him for three runs, three hits and two walks in his bigleague debut Sept. 2, Tarpley didn’t allow a run in eight innings pitched over nine games. During the stretch he gave up three hits, struck out 12, walked four, held hitters to a .107 batting average and a .326 OPS.

Those nine games were good enough to get Tarpley a spot on the postseason roster for the wild-card game and the ALDS against the Red Sox — in which he gave up three earned runs and four hits in one inning of Game 3, which the Red Sox won, 16-1, to take command of the best-of-five affair they won in four games.

Tarpley was acquired from the Pirates in the 2016 trade that sent Ivan Nova to Pittsburgh. In a combined 36 games for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Double-A Trenton last season, Tarpley went 7-2 with a 1.94 ERA and struck out 71 in 692/3 innings.

“Stay focused and grind it out,’’ Tarpley said about the crowd of relievers that includes Kahnle, Luis Cessa and Domingo German competing for two spots in the pen. “Keep the same feeling that got me here.’’
