‘Finger snip’ day care in new woe

- By MELISSA KLEIN

The Westchester daycare center where a toddler’s fingertip was severed in December has since reported two more “serious incidents” to state authorities.

The Learning Experience in Dobbs Ferry reported one incident on Jan. 17 and another on Jan. 23

The first involved “children left alone without competent supervision” when a teacher walked out of a classroom, and in the second incident a parent found a box cutter in a classroom, although the room had been locked and was not in use, according to the state Office of Children and Family Services.

The center is still facing possible revocation of its license after the finger of Max Blank (above, with his parents) was caught in a door on Dec. 11.

Instead of calling 911, the center’s director notified Max’s mother and downplayed the extent of his injury, his parents contend.

After the tot’s grandparents picked him up, they realized the boy’s finger- tip was missing and drove back to the center to get it. Doctors were able to reattach it.

The state closed the center for a few days. After paying a $5,000 fine, it was back in business. A corporate monitor is required by the state to oversee the facility.

The center is part of a national chain that advertises franchise opportunities saying “no experience required.”

Gregory Salsburg, a Learning Experience spokesman, said he couldn’t comment on specific situations.

“We . . . continuously work with all relevant agencies with respect to our education and training practices and policies,” he said.
