Durant, happy for KP, avoids Knicks talk
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Kevin Durant said he’s happy for Kristaps Porzingis and DeAndre Jordan, but gave no indication on how the blockbuster trade between the Knicks and Mavericks could change his future.
The trade opened two max-contract slots for the Knicks, leading to stronger speculation Durant will come to New York and bring along a star — perhaps point guard Kyrie Irving.
Durant got angry at the Knicks speculation less than two weeks ago, but refused to give any commitment to returning to the Warriors. Golden State teammate Klay Thompson has said he hopes to retire a Warrior, but that’s hardly coming from the mouth of Durant.
“That’s on them,’’ Durant said on why fans think he’s leaving. “I’ll figure it out once we get to that point.”
Asked what he thought of the Porzingis trade, Durant said, “I play basketball for the Warriors. My main concern is being the best basketball player I can be. I have no concerns about trades or transactions throughout the season with other teams. Has nothing to do with me. I’m glad Porzingis is in a better spot for him. I look forward to Luka [Doncic] and him playing together for years to come.”
Jordan, who came to the Knicks in the trade, perhaps can be another recruiter if he sticks around.
“It’s my friend, he got traded and I think he’s in a good place,’’ Durant said. “He understands what the business is like. We talk about life more so than the NBA. He’ll be fine [in New York].’’
Durant’s key connection to becoming a Knick is his agent/manager Rich Kleiman, a native New Yorker and longtime Knicks fan. Kleiman has a relationship with president Steve Mills. There are rumors that if Durant ever came to the Knicks, Kleiman would join the front office.
“He’s been with me for a long minute, so I trust him,’’ Durant said.
Durant added his recent rant was out of frustration that the fans are caring more about “the soap opera’’ than the game on the court.
