Kanter: I’d endorse Knicks to top free agents

- By ZACH BRAZILLER

Enes Kanter’s rocky ending with the Knicks didn’t sour him on the organization or the city. In fact, the veteran forward said he would recommend the Knicks to top free agents if they asked him for his input.

“Of course. It’s a very good organization. Good people. Amazing city,” he told reporters on Wednesday as he practiced with his new team, the Trail Blazers, at Barclays Center in preparation for Thursday’s game against the Nets. “So I think that they have a really good chance to get good superstars.”

Kanter said he chose the Trail Blazers over the Lakers after the Knicks released him on Feb. 7. He averaged 14 points and 10.5 rebounds in 44 games this season, but played just twice for the Knicks in his last five weeks with the team. He was vocal in his displeasure of his benching by coach David Fizdale, as he was held out in favor of young big men Mitchell Robinson and Luke Kornet. But Kanter sang a different tune Wednesday. “Knicks fans, I would just say thank you for being patient with the team, with me,” Kanter said. “I wish them well. I know in the future they’re going to do very well.

“Before I left, I had a conversation with Steve Mills, Scott Perry and David Fizdale. It actually went very well. I wished them well. They wished me well. They said there were no hard feelings. I told them, ‘I understand what you guys are trying to do.’ ”

Off two games with the Knicks, sharpshooter John Jenkins is on the verge of signing a two-year contract for the league minimum, according to a source.

The deal calls for Jenkins to be signed for the rest of this season, and has 2019-20 non-guaranteed, but with an early trigger date. Jenkins was signed to a 10-day contract last week and played in two games. He had a large role in the Knicks’ skid-busting victory in Atlanta last Thursday.

Jenkins, who has played with four prior NBA teams, scored 21 points in his two Knicks outings, shooting 9-of-18 overall and 3-of-9 from 3point range.

The Knicks announced the signing of former Marquette star forward Henry Ellenson to a 10day contract. A first-round pick in 2016 by the Pistons (18th overall), the 22-year-old Ellenson appeared in 59 games for Detroit over the past three years, averaging 3.8 points and 2.2 rebounds.
