Big Blue looking for QB of future

It was not a promise, but it is a hope. Giants general manager Dave Gettleman wants to add the quarterback of the future and have him learn behind Eli Manning.

So does this mean a prospect at the most important position on the field will be added to the roster via the NFL draft or another means?

“If everything works out, probably,’’ Gettleman said Monday on WFAN.

The man running the football show for the Giants last month expressed his great desire, as his legacy, to find the next franchise quarterback. The urgency has never been greater, with Eli Manning at 38 heading into the final year of his contract. Gettleman said “I’d be a real clown’’ if he did not recognize new blood is needed, but he fell short of guaranteeing he will get one this year.

“Would I like to do something now? Probably,’’ Gettleman said. “But I have to believe it’s the right guy to be the quarter- back for this iconic franchise.’’

There are two avenues for Gettleman to consider. He can take one in the draft — Gettleman said that is the “most likely’’ scenario — with Dwayne Haskins of Ohio State and Drew Lock of Missouri the two most likely options, at this point, as the Giants have two picks (Nos. 6 and 17) in the first round. Or else, the Giants could try to pry Josh Rosen out of Arizona, if the Cardinals are indeed serious about taking Kyler Murray with the No. 1 pick in the draft.

“Obviously the ideal situation is you bring in a young kid and let him learn from the old pro,’’ Gettleman said, reiterating the “Kansas City model’’ he desires to duplicate, with the Chiefs having Patrick Mahomes sit for a year behind Alex Smith. “The worst thing you can do is force something. Do I feel forced to do something now? No.’’
