Mets face decision on Mesoraco

- By MIKE PUMA

PORT ST. LUCIE — Devin Mesoraco could be headed elsewhere if the Mets don’t plan to place him on the 25-man roster.

The veteran catcher, who returned to the team in the offseason on a minor league deal, has an “upward mobility” clause in his contract that can be exercised Wednesday. If the Mets don’t tell Mesoraco he is on the team by then, he has a 72-hour window to find a major league job.

Wilson Ramos is the Mets’ primary catcher, and general manager Brodie Van Wagenen has indicated Travis d’Arnaud will be on the team if he’s healthy. But d’Arnaud, who is returning from Tommy John surgery, still has hurdles to clear.

Mainly, d’Arnaud still has to show he can catch consecutive games — he will get that opportunity Thursday and Friday, according to manager Mickey Callaway — and complete nine innings behind the plate. The Mets also have a fourth catcher in camp in Tomas Nido.

“I think we have guys that can all catch at the major league level and we have got to figure out exactly where some people are at,” Callaway said Tuesday. “We have to figure out with others who is going to be over who at this point.

“We are continuing to communicate about that daily and trying to figure out playing time based on some of those things and who we need to see moving forward, so it’s already a difficult conversation because we feel all four of those guys can catch at the major league level and contribute.”

Mesoraco was behind the plate for 21 of Jacob deGrom’s starts in the pitcher’s Cy Young Award-winning season in 2018.

The Mets could conceivably carry three catchers to begin the season if they don’t want to risk losing Mesoraco.

The Mets were rained out against the Marlins, leaving team officials to arrange a minor league scrimmage for Wednesday, which was initially a scheduled day off.

Zack Wheeler will pitch in the scrimmage — his last full outing in spring training (he will likely make an abbreviated appearance in Monday’s exhibition finale). Seth Lugo and Robert Gsellman are also expected to appear in the scrimmage.
